The secure landfill is the area
allocated for scheduled and hazardous wastes only. This secure landfill
is approximately 4 hectares. |

| The Secure Landfill is designed and constructed to highest standards
to cater for scheduled and hazardous wastes. |
| Wastes not suitable for incineration and the ashes from the Scheduled
Waste Incineration Plant are deposited in the Secure Landfill. |
| Here, a double-liner system has been constructed for maximum safety
while the facility itself sits on solid rock as a geological barrier. |
| The Secure Landfill will be constructed in fours stages over the
lifespan of the plant which is scheduled to be 25 years. Most stringent
operating procedures and permanent covering of the wastes with impermeable
materials ensure that this landfill does not have any adverse impact
on the environment or the people working at the facility. |
The leachate water from the Secure Landfill is pre-treated in
a chemical treatment stage where heavy metals are removed, before
the pre-treated leachate undergoes the same extensive treatment
like all leachate water from the Sanitary Lanndfill.
